You'd think we'd all know how to close apps by now, but sometimes different systems do things in different ways. Sometimes it is nice to have a quick update on how a specific device behaves. Today I'm going to cover managing and closing apps on the Amazon Fire tablet.

Apps are the secret sauce that makes tablets and smartphones more useful. They build on those installed by the vendor to offer everything from security to games and pretty much anything else you can think of. Some will be offered by established companies while others will be released by hobbyist developers. Each one does something a little differently or in a slightly different way.

The Amazon Fire uses a modified version of Android called Fire OS. Although it is not much different, it certainly does. The advantage is that if you know how an Android device works, you can probably work with Amazon Fire. If you can use the Google Play Store to load applications, you can do the same with the Amazon Appstore.

Amazon Fire operating system

The main difference, apart from appearance, is that the Amazon Fire OS does not use the Google Play Store, but its own Amazon App Store. The reason why the Amazon fire is so cheap is because it is used as a loss leader to get you into the Amazon ecosystem. By making Fire cheap, more people will buy it. The more there are, the more likely you are to buy an app, book, movie, or other digital product from Amazon. This is where they make their money.

Manage and close apps on Kindle Fire

To see the Amazon Fire apps, turn on your Amazon Fire and navigate through the home screen. Most installed apps will have an icon here so you can access them quickly. Take a look around you and see what you have.

  • To start an application, touch the icon. It should open and start working immediately.
  • To remove an application, press and hold the icon. Select Remove from device when it appears and confirm your choice.
  • To close applications, select the square icon at the bottom of the screen to display all open applications. Select the X at the top right of each of them to close.

Installing New Applications on Amazon Fire

To install a new application on your Amazon Fire, use the Amazon Appstore. This is the official place to get new apps. It's not the only place, but I'll cover it in a minute. Some versions of the Kindle Fire already have it installed, others not for some reason.

If your Fire doesn't have it installed, here's how to get it.

  1. Select Settings on your Amazon Fire.
  2. Select Security and enable Unknown sources by checking the box.
  3. Open your browser and navigate to http://www.amazon.com/getappstore.
  4. Swipe down from the top of the screen and select the download you want to install.
  5. Agree to the T & Cs and allow installation.
  6. Navigate to the app store once installed.

Even if any application that you install from the Amazon Appstore is authorized, you will need to enable Unknown Sources from settings. If you don't, some apps won't work properly and may cause problems.

Force close apps on Amazon Fire

So you know that you should use the square icon at the bottom of the screen to show all open apps and tap the white X at the top right of each one to close. But what if they don't close or you think there are more applications running than shown? Open apps can slow down your Kindle Fire and drain your battery, so ideally you only want the ones you need to run.

  1. Select Settings on the Amazon Fire home screen.
  2. Select Applications and manage all applications.
  3. Select Run applications.
  4. Select an app to close and select Force Stop.
  5. Select OK when prompted.
  6. Rinse and repeat for all the applications you want to close.

Depending on your version of Amazon Fire, the menu options may be slightly different. The above refers to newer devices, as that is what I have. You may just need to scroll down on the home page and select Applications from the drop-down menu. You can filter by running applications from there and force them to stop.

Adding the Google Play Store to Amazon Fire

I mentioned before that you can load the Google Play Store on your Amazon Fire to unlock its full potential. I have yet to do this so I can't describe the process, however the guys at Lifehacker have done it and they have a good guide here.

I really value the Amazon Fire tablet. For the money, there are few better tablets out there and once you get your hands on things, it's a breeze to use. I hope this guide has helped you get the most out of your Amazon Fire tablet!
